With spring and summer comes, as is traditional, the season of outdoor athletics, dominated this year by an international sporting event at a continental level as the European Championships, to be held this August in Zurich (Switzerland), and the classic meetings part of the IAAF Diamond League (heir to the former Golden League), which shall take place as every year in places like Doha (Qatar), Shanghai (China), Eugene (USA), Rome (Italy), Oslo (Norway), Lausanne (Switzerland), Paris (France), Glasgow (United Kingdom), Monaco, Stockholm (Sweden), Birmingham (UK) and Brussels (Belgium), as well as countless other competitions of lower order -national and international- spread worldwide.
In all these events, athletes from around the world will test their limits to try to reach new personal achievements, climb to the higher places of the podium and, of course, try to break world records. While it is true that athletics reaches its maximum diffusion when the World Championships or Olympic Games are held (which does not happen this year), should also be noted that records are also beaten in other competitions, often far of the mass media focus.
Among the records in men category broken in the early twenty-first century, we can mention the following: 100 m, 200 m, 800 m, 5,000 m, 10,000 m, Marathon, 110 m hurdles, 3,000 m steeplechase, Pole vault, 4x100 m, 20 km walk, 50 km walk and Decathlon, but we also find records that seem hard to beat so far as the 400 m (1999), 1500 m (1998), 400 m hurdles (1992), Long jump (1991), Triple Jump (1995), High jump and 4x400 m (1993), Shot put (1990), Discus and Hammer throw (1986) and Javelin (1996).
As for the women, the years of this century have also brought some records such as 5,000 m, Marathon, 400 m hurdles, 3,000 m steeplechase, Pole vault, Hammer throw, Javelin, 20 km walk and 4x100 m, but the most spectacular records made at the end of XX century still resist, such as the 100 m, 200 m, 100 m hurdles, Long jump, Discus throw, 4x400 and Heptathlon (1988), 400 m (1985), 800 m (1983), 10,000 m and 1,500 m (1993), High jump and Shot put (1987), Triple Jump (1995).
Difficult, but not impossible challenges for the world athletics stars, which over the next months will attempt reach the glory.
